Veterans Day
Veterans Day is celebrated on the 11th
hour of the 11th day of the 11th month because a
temporary cessation of hostiles was declared between the allied nations and
Germany in the First World War. This
holiday first became a legal holiday in 1938.
It is a holiday dedicated to American Veterans of all wars. Even though
the war officially ended on June 28, 1919, November 11th remained
the public date of when the “Great War” ended. This day usually consists of parades
and public gatherings as well as a pause in all activities at 11 am. On
November 11th of 1921, an unidentified American solider was buried
at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. The U.S. congress declared
that day a legal federal holiday and in honor of all those who participated in
war.
Reflection: I think that it’s a good
thing that we have a holiday for the people who serve our country. Not only do
they risk their lives for us but they also have to leave their families behind,
knowing that there is a possibility that they will never see them again. I
think it’s a good way to honor them and or remember them with parades and
ceremonies at their tombs. We should have a respect for them and always
appreciate that they protect us and fight for our freedom.
